Business Overview
Food and nutrition are ever-present concerns in the Kakuma Refugee Camp. Most refugees do not have access to enough food, and the food that is available is typically not nutritious and bland. So, Chusa Baimuka started his business as a solution to these problems in 2022. Chusa’s AAM-Enterprise provides refugees with various types of fish from Lake Turkana, the largest local lake in the Kakuma area. They sell many kinds of fish in various product offerings, including fresh, dried, fried, and smoked. The business sells fish in both wholesale and retail markets, and they also provide a delivery service to customers who purchase a subscription. The business has gained a large market share and a great deal of popularity in Kakuma over the past two years. Chusa’s ability to provide a unique product that allows refugees to have variety in their diet has proven so far to be a very successful and has improved life in Kakuma.
The Entrepreneur
Chusa Baimuka is originally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and has lived in Kakuma for 3 years. Civil war broke out in the DRC when he was a child, and he eventually fled to Kenya with his family in 2021. He has been interested in entrepreneurship and business since he was 15 years old, and quickly started his fish enterprise shortly after he arrived in Kakuma.

Chusa is trying to raise $1,000 to improve and grow his business. He will use the funds to purchase new equipment necessary to expand his business such as solar panels, scales, a refrigerator, and coolers to transport the fish. The money will also allow him to build better connections with his suppliers and establish his business better in the market.
