Business Overview
The easiest and most popular method of getting around Kakuma is by motorbike. The roads and long distances make it difficult to use bicycles, and cars are too large and expensive. Therefore, motorbike has become the most popular means of transportation in the camp. There is even a large and growing industry of motorbike taxis and delivery services in Kakuma, called “bodaboda”. The widespread use of motorbikes for personal transportation and these marketable services means there is a real need for motorbike repair shops.
Peace and Hope Garage is one of the few motorbike and auto repair shops in Kakuma. Idriss started the shop after gaining experience in the industry and seeing the growing need for repair shops in the camp. At the shop, he not only repairs motorbikes, but also sells spare parts to customers who can’t afford to pay him for the repair and want to do it themselves. He has also created many programs to build customer satisfaction in his business, such as customer loyalty programs and consistently reliable service.
The Entrepreneur
Idriss is originally from Burundi and has lived in the Kakuma Refugee Camp for twelve years. He fled from Burundi with his family to escape violence and find better opportunities in Kenya. He has many years work experience as a mechanic, including for Peace Wind Japan and Toyota Kenya.
Get Involved
Idriss is looking to raise $500 to purchase a greater variety of spare parts and to transport them to Kakuma from different parts of Kenya. Your donation can make a real difference for Idriss as he works to expand his mechanic shop and improve the lives of his fellow refugees.
