Refugee
Wilondja Mushuzo Marcel is originally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He completed his schooling and received a diploma before having to flee his home country and come to the Kakuma Refugee Camp in 2013. Since coming to Kakuma, he has worked with many international NGO’s in the camp. He wants to start a business that will allow him to earn money for his family and also help youth in the camp to learn skills and have jobs.
Need
Sanitation is a significant area of need in the Kakuma Refugee Camp. There are no sophisticated plumbing systems, and the only kinds of toilets available to the refugees are open-pit latrines. These latrines are often used for many years at a time, and can become disease-ridden and unhygienic. Sato pans are a plastic insert that can be installed into an open-pit latrine that increases cleanliness and limits the spread of smells and disease.
Use
Wilondja needs startup capital to get his business off the ground. 100% of this $500 campaign will go towards buying Sato pans to sell and affording transportation for him to distribute them. One Sato pan costs $4.25, and so $500 will allow him to buy well over 100 Sato pans to begin his business.
Impact
With this loan, Wilondja will be able to start his business and after a few months, will be earning an income of over $30 USD per month. This amount will put him above the extreme poverty line in Kenya and will help him and his family get out of poverty. His business will also have a very positive impact on Kakuma as a whole because his product will allow refugees to have better sanitation and hygiene.
Creditworthiness
Wilondja performed very well in his ETC class and graduated successfully from the 6-week program. He is considered very likely to repay back 100% of the loan he will receive with your funds.
